The self-charging Corolla Cross Hybrid harnesses more than 20 years of hi-tech innovation
from the world leaders in hybrid technology – Toyota. The Hybrid system works by
combining an electric motor with a petrol engine. Excess power from the engine charges the
battery when it’s running low, while the battery is also charged whenever you brake through
regenerative braking. The electric motor and the petrol engine work together seamlessly, to
always optimise your power source.
This means that you get more kilometres out of a single tank of petrol as well as being more
environmentally friendly with less CO2 emitted.
In the Hybrid models, power is recorded at 72 kW @ 5 200 r/min, with a combined system
output of the hybrid and conventional motor peaking at 90 kW. Torque figures on the hybrid
derivative are recorded at 142 Nm @ 3 600 r/min.
Because hybrid technology automatically manages the outputs of the petrol engine and
electric motor to optimise its efficiency, this model achieves an average fuel consumption
figure of just 4.3L / 100 km, and matching emissions of a mere 98 g/km CO2, reducing the
impact on the environment.
